April 01, 2011: On Wednesday former manager of a nuclear power plant in California sued the operators of the facility saying that he was fired because he had reported concerns over the safety norms at the plant.
Nuclear regulatory commission had already rebuked the company a year ago on grounds of safety concerns aired by the employees and the law suit against the owner of the San Onofre nuclear power generating unit has come exactly a year later.
The Southern California Edison nuclear power generation station has been reprimanded in March 2010 by the NRC ordering it to create a work place climate in which the employees have the freedom to speak up about the safety issues of the plant and not retribution for reporting concern.
A copy of the letter has been supplied to the reporters by Paul Diaz’s lawyers.
There were numerous calls and emails from anonymous caller from inside the plant stating that shortcuts are being used to test the new generators, violation of safety norms, creating false records and a cover-up culture is being promoted.
According to the suit the inquiry of NRC was prompted by these anonymous calls. The suit included other problems of the workers like fatigue because of lengthy shifts and demands for overtime.
Gil Alexander, spokesperson for Edison nuclear power station, in a written statement said that so far the company has not received a copy of the suit and he would not comment on a litigation which is pending.
The suit was filed by Diaz on Wednesday in the Los Angeles county court seeking damages which were not specified. Southern California Edison nuclear power plant and his previous supervisor were named in the complaint.
